The Future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Can These Projects Overcome Superhero Fatigue?

Regardless of whether or not you like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it is a fact that it is the highest grossing franchise in history. This is not something to be achieved without a real interest in seeing what the House of Ideas has to offer. Superhero cinema benefited greatly from the MCU and, even across the street, in DCthey noticed the impulse.

But everything in this life is finite, except human stupidity, which seems infinite, and the universe. Of this second, as Einstein would say, I am not very sure. The bonanza era of the Marvel Cinematic Universe seems to be over, and although some projects continue to rear their heads and attract enough people to justify their huge budgets.

This is not always the case, and there are some high-profile setbacks that have barely managed to recover the investment. The strategy of Marvel Studios Saturating the market with film and television adaptations of their comics seemed like a panacea in 2019, with the arrival of Disney+, but that is not the case.

With Marvel navigating quicksand in phases four and five of the MCU, it’s easy to wonder if this superhero fatigue, which isn’t exclusive to the House of Ideas, will be overcome by any of them.

Today I am going to break the spear in favor of some of them, but, I don’t even get 100% wet because at Marvel they are so obsessed with their self-sabotage that they are capable of ruining them too.

Loki – Season 2

Marvel Studios

As of this writing, Secret Invasion isn’t over yet, but its ratings aren’t amazing, and neither are the debates it’s generated.

The next stop will be Loki season 2, where Marvel has a chance to put his trajectory on track with the character of Tom Hiddleston.

It is a series that have chances to overcome the situation for two reasons: the great protagonist tandem that it has, and the fact that it is the continuation of the most successful Marvel series on Disney+.

If Loki season 2 hits the mark, it’s quite difficult that anything that comes after it manages to raise its head properly. At least in the medium term.

The Marvels

The next stop is on the big screen, with Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) and Fotto (Teyonah Parris). The Marvels is the sequel to one of the least-seen Marvel series, a secondary character in Scarlet Witch and Vision and the superheroine who made more noise outside than inside movie theaters, although she did succeed, mind you.

Can you succeed? Can. Will it succeed? It will probably stay at an intermediate level. They are characters that are of interest to fairly defined segments of the population, so blindly trusting in success is aiming too high.

Echo

Speaking of secondary characters, at the end of November Echo arrives, with the homonymous character from Alaqua Cox from Hawkeye.

Ironically, its great attraction is not its protagonist, but its antagonist, Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio), and the presence of the Daredevil of Charlie Cox. Like The Marvels, Echo may move to the middle of the interest table.

Deadpool 3

Ryan Reynolds y Hugh Jackman are enough of a draw for the third installment of the Merc with a Mouth to perform perfectly at the box office and be a white blackbird in the hodgepodge of Marvel Studios projects.

Be careful, the film can succeed at the box office, and be a narrative disaster. Hopefully not, but there is that possibility.

The need for Marvel to please everyone and the real risk that they will try to soften many aspects of Deadpool are there. They are a reality that every Massacre fan has in mind every time news about the third film breaks.

If at Marvel Studios they leave their notes on how to make a movie and let Ryan Reynolds and company do what they know, things will be fine. If not…well, thanks for everything, Wade.

Captain America: Brave New World

Marvel Studios

A Anthony Mackie they have given him a whole series so that the public gets used to the fact that he is the new Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following the line of the comics.

But the shoes that Mr. Mackie has to fill are very large, and the arch of the Steve Rogers of Chris Evans It was wonderful. With that long shadow over him, things would have to improve a lot for him to Captain America: Brave New World be a resounding success.

Thunderbolts

In the absence of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel issues the call for another group of ruffians to take their place. For talent, the film of the Thunderbolts.

The problem can come from the chemistry that the team transmits on the screen and the story they have to tell and, naturally, how they tell it.

Blade

Marvel Studios

Another one who has big shoes to fill is Mahershala Ali with Blade. It’s not just that it has to be the replacement for that Wesley Snipes trilogy, but Marvel doesn’t seem to know what to make of He Who Seen the Sun.

The movie of Blade in the MCU it has been delayed so many times that it is already a meme, one that, in fact, does not quite fit into any of the current narrative lines that the MCU has open. You can open a new one, of course, or take the mystical route, but on that side there is also an important traffic jam after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of madness.

the fantastic four

Yes, I hope Fantastic Four succeeds at the box office, even if we don’t know who the hell will be playing Marvel’s first family.

Much of the film’s success will depend on that secret casting that they seem afraid to reveal, with another portion of responsibility for the script.

The Fantastic 4 are indispensable characters in Marvel and, in fact, they should have opened the door. Multiverse Saganot reach its end.

The handicap is that John Krasinski already said that his cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was a one-time thing, so the best candidate is left out.

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars

Marvel has a big problem with Kang the Conqueror, although it is not the fault of the House of Ideas. Part of the fate of the two films that will close the Saga of the Multiverse depend on what justice dictates for Jonathan Majors after the accusations against him for assault.

The other part of the weight of the fate of these two films depends entirely on how the rest of Phase 5 and Phase 6 evolve. I can make all the possible cabals, but better ask Doctor Strange to scrutinize millions of futures to find out if in something goes well.

series hodgepodge

Marvel Studios

I have commented on the two most immediate series, Loki and Echo, but Marvel has announced so many series that it does not make any sense to delve into all of them. I’m going to highlight Daredevil: Born Again for the same virtues as Echo, and Novadepending on its cast, because it is a character that many look forward to.

On the other side of the scale, Ironheart smells like it will follow the same steps as Ms. Marvel and will be one of the weak series in terms of audience. It’s Williams It did not finish captivating in its passage through Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Oh, and what if…? that I almost forgot. The animated anthology works well on its own and the first season didn’t go bad, which could serve as a lifeline for the second.

What we can expect from the series of the Dora Mileage, Spider-Man: Freshman Year, Spider-Man: Sophomore Year, Marvel Zombies, Wonder Man y Vision Quest, is that Marvel space them. We’ve already seen how content saturation works, and it’s not pretty.

By the way, at Marvel Studios they could start to get their act together in the field of CGI and, instead of burdening post-production studios with tons of work, streamline the pipeline and not lead to sloppy or rushed finishes, like Ironheart’s suit in Black Panther 2, to name just one of Marvel’s many problems.

Go ahead, I would love for all this content to succeed, both as a fan and professionally. When these types of films are successful, they generate attention to the news that is released about them and, by extension, it is to our benefit.

Having said that. Everything can change if Marvel straightens up or if, instead, he decides to spoil the silver bullets he still has left in his chamber. What will happen? They are going to be three very curious years, really.
