The Future of the Genocide Memorial in Downtown Cologne: Dialogue and Finding an Appropriate Remembrance

The Cologne council decided to approve the artwork until after the summer break. After that, the city administration should start a dialogue and finding process with all those involved in order to find an appropriate and contemporary form of remembrance according to the city. The genocide memorial in downtown Cologne was erected in March and only had a temporary permit that had now expired. There are protests from Turkish associations against the memorial. While Germany passed a corresponding resolution years ago, the genocide in Turkey has not been recognized to this day.
