The Future of the Cultural Sector in the City: Concerns and Potential Cuts

The directors of Ketelhuis and De Balie are concerned about the future of the cultural sector in the city. The party manifesto of the PVV, the clear winner in the elections, states that not a single euro will go to cultural institutions. “You can count on that, if they sit long enough, there will be significant cuts.”

In Het Ketelhuis, the small cinema in the Westerpark, director Alex de Ronde is not entirely shocked by the outcome. “The fact that there were only two parties that wanted to invest in art and culture. Only Groenlinks/PvdA and D66 had that in their party programs.”

Yoeri Albrecht, director of debate center De Balie, agrees. “It says something that we, as a cultural sector, apparently cannot convince people about how important this sector is for society.” Yet De Ronde still has to see it all happen. “I would be surprised if Geert Wilders comes into the cabinet. If that happens, it would really be disastrous.”

At De Balie they expect the election results to be positive for the social debate. “The increasing difference about what a good society is will have to lead to more conversation. You have to come together, you have to understand each other’s ideas, you have to understand each other’s background. So from a social perspective, I think the future of the Bar is bright. “
