The Future of the Bundesliga: VfB President Claus Vogt’s Optimistic View and the Search for a Sports Director

There has recently been a lot of pessimism about the future of the Bundesliga, especially after the procedure for an investor in a DFL subsidiary that burst in May. VfB President Claus Vogt is nevertheless of the opinion that the German bel étage is still attractive.

“There is no Lionel Messi playing for us, no Cristiano Ronaldo, but the stadiums are full. In 2022/23 we had the highest ticket sales in the history of the Bundesliga,” says Vogt in an interview in the current Monday edition of kicker and continues: ” I have my doubts that if more money goes only to players and agents, it will automatically lead to more interesting and sustainable competition.”

A central topic in Stuttgart, where Vogt heads the supervisory board of the outsourced professional football company, is currently the search for a sports director. Sports director Fabian Wohlgemuth also plays a role here, with the 54-year-old wanting to draw clear boundaries between the positions: “We want to consciously separate them. The sports director needs to focus on current professional football, the board of directors must see the entire VfB and the strategy in sports have an eye on. Fabian is a great sports director, but of course we also talk to him about the other role.”

Sports director post: Khedira has “a different plan for life”

Sami Khedira and Philipp Lahm, who were hired in September 2022 as advisors to the CEO Alexander Wehrle, who is temporarily responsible for the sports department, play no role. “Sami has a different plan for life. Philipp is available from time to time, but is completely busy as a figurehead for the EM 2024,” explains the entrepreneur. The presentation of Lahm and Khedira was the obvious break with the then sports director Sven Mislintat. In December 2022 there was a separation. Now Vogt makes it clear: “We offered Sven the post of sports director, but unfortunately he didn’t want it.” A statement that Mislintat has always contradicted.

In the interview in the printed version, you can read when Porsche AG will formally become a shareholder in VfB, how Vogt stands on the problem of the excessive penalties for pyrotechnics in the fan corners and how he intends to deal with possible vote-out requests at the general meeting of the Bundesliga club in September Monday edition of the kicker (also as eMagazine available).
