The new, modified circuit in Singapore was a real success. The track in the South Asian city-state was more fun than usual after the rebuild and noticeably easier to overtake. However, few people know that the changes made to the order at the fifteenth event of the season are only temporary. After three years, the old, more tortuous and, first of all, more boring version of Marina Bay will return, which many of the drivers in the starting field have been proud of in the past – and it is no different today. The pilots are in favor of keeping the newer variant, but the important thing is how the race promoter will respond to the request. Well, how?
Marina Bay, subject to the completion of construction work on part of the circuit, will return to its old layout in 2027. However, drivers appreciate the new layout without the back-to-back slow four-turn sequence.
“It was fun,” he said on the sidelines of the new circuit in Singapore Fernando Alonso. “I think there has been an improvement over the past. The current layout is a bit faster and easier to get into. I must therefore say that I am satisfied with the changes made.”
Like the 42-year-old matador, he spoke a little younger Valtteri Bottas. “I think the current track at least creates a bit more overtaking opportunities and is a bit faster.” Like the Spaniard and the Finn, the other pilots of the starting field see it as well, who after the pre-race Friday drivers’ briefing issued a unanimous opinion that they are in favor of maintaining the current layout of the Marina Bay circuit.
However, the promoter will have the main say, who would lose a considerable amount of money every year if they did not return to the old version of the track. The new version of the circuit lacks one grandstand, which can usually accommodate up to 25,000 spectators, which represents approximately 17% of all daily visitors.
What about that? How do you arrive at a solution that will, as the saying goes, “keep both the wolf fed and the sheep whole?” Event promoter Colin Sin suggested there could be a compromise. He proposes that the track goes around the Bay Grandstand again and again, but through a modified and faster sequence of turns.
“We don’t know how long it will take the government to rebuild,” he noted Sin pre Motorsport.com. “Construction work could take more than years, currently estimated to be completed in 2028. But we don’t know for sure yet.”
“When the construction work is finished, measures will be taken to make the track more liveable.” However, there can be no question of the persistent absence of the main stand: “It has a capacity of 25,000 seats, it would be like having a hole in your pocket,” concluded Sin.
