“The future of Seat is Cupra, where we are concentrating our investments,” Thomas Schäfer told Quattroruote, speaking of the implications of the transition. In addition to managing the Volkswagen brand, he has strategic supervision of the two Spanish brands, as well as Skoda. Indeed, Seat has not been affected by the electric investments and remains focused on combustion models, which has raised many doubts in the press and in public opinion about its fate. “However”, Schäfer specified, “the brand will not disappear”.
Current models up to the end of the cycle. According to the top manager, the current models will regularly continue their life cycle – which means, we deduce, around 2028 – after which the brand will transform into something else, in a sort of “entry ticket to the Volkswagen world ”. Schäfer doesn’t want to go too far. However, according to information gathered by Quattroruote, among the hypotheses on the table there would be that of a specialization in the urban micro-mobility sector, which the Spanish brand had already explored a few years ago with the Minimo concept.
Spain is not touched. However the future of the Seat brand develops, Volkswagen’s production backbone in Spain is not in question. “The Martorell plant will be home to the family of electric compacts with the Cupra, Skoda and Volkswagen brands, which will use around 70% of the capacity. The remaining 30 could go to another Cupra model”. The future of the Pamplona plant and the Portuguese Palmela plant where the Volkswagen T-Roc is assembled today are equally secure.
