Compare different looks on the PC or smartphone and choose the dress, pants or shirt in the right size right away? This is what the virtual fitting promises when shopping online. Some retailers already offer them.
So far, however, only about every tenth online buyer (9 percent) has used this function. This is shown by a representative survey commissioned by the IT industry association Bitkom.
However, more than one in three (36 percent) can imagine this and would like to use a virtual fitting via an interactive function in online shops. Almost half of those surveyed (48 percent) have no interest in it.
3D models are standard, avatars are the future
So-called digital fitting tools are used for the virtual fitting. With the help of body scans, individual and realistic avatars are created as online models, the association explains. Artificial intelligence can determine the right size. Individual items of clothing can then be tried on virtually using augmented reality.
The variant in which products are presented as 3D models for an all-round view is currently more common. After all, 30 percent of those surveyed have already used it. More than one in three (38 percent) has not yet done so, but would like to use the function when shopping online.
