The Future of Microsoft’s PC Accessories: The End of the Microsoft Brand?

Microsoft has been a leader in PC accessories for decades, with its first computer mice hitting the market in 1983, a year or two before the Macintosh popularized pointing devices. But as of 2023, the company will no longer sell accessories under the Microsoft brand name, according to an announcement from Microsoft’s Dan Laycock. Instead, Microsoft will focus on its higher-end Surface-branded keyboards, mice, and other accessories.

While Surface-branded products currently on the market tend to be pricier than Microsoft-branded alternatives, it remains to be seen whether Microsoft plans to discontinue its lower-cost and ergonomic accessories entirely. These products, like the Ergonomic Keyboard and Mouse, are popular among consumers who might not want to spend as much on PC accessories but still want high quality from a trusted brand. Additionally, there are currently no inexpensive standalone webcams in the Surface lineup, and some of Microsoft’s ergonomic accessories don’t yet have a Surface-branded equivalent.

Thus, consumers should keep an eye on Microsoft’s future plans for these kinds of accessories. The company will continue to sell existing Microsoft-branded PC accessories like mice, keyboards, and webcams for the time being, but not in any new markets. It will also continue to manufacture Surface-branded PC accessories, including mice, keyboards, pens, docks, adaptive accessories, and more. However, Laycock’s remarks made clear that the company’s focus will be on the Surface brand.
