The next “big thing” in mobile display panels will be the transition to MicroLED displays. This display technology is covered by the Microled Association group, which has published a short-, medium- and long-term outlook on the adaptation of MicroLED displays in various areas of electronics in addition to the current state. The watch can look forward to the new display very soon, but such smartphones will not be available until 10 years from now!
Roadmap for deploying MicroLED displays (not only) in mobile devices. Wearables will come first, then tablets and finally smartphones. And that’s probably only in 10 years!
Although you can already find MicroLED on the market at the moment, the technology has not yet matured to such a stage that we could talk about its price suitability for the mass market. And, although MicroLED has similar advantages to currently used OLED panels (LEDs light up by themselves, high brightness, absolute black, …), there is one significant difference. MicroLED does not use organic materials in its design that are prone to aging. In other words, they do not gradually decrease in luminosity over time. The panels have a longer lifespan, they shine up to three times as much as current OLED displays and there is no risk of the so-called “burning-in” problem.
However, the production of MicroLED displays is currently extremely difficult to produce, taking into account the high production price (due to low yield) and the difficulty of assembling large MicroLED displays from small segments. And this was reflected in the association’s outlook for the future, in which phones are obviously getting the short end of the stick. Pilot projects and research solutions of MicroLED displays for smartphones are to take place only in the years 2030 – 2033. That is, at the time when MicroLED televisions should slowly become more affordable…
Smartphones will get the short end of the stick
…but from the perspective it is clear that MicroLED displays will be the very last to enter smartphones. On the opposite side, there are MicroLED displays for wearables and glasses for virtual and mixed reality, for which the first projects and research are already taking place, and in the years 2026-2029 this type of display should be completely self-evident for premium products. Tablets, together with monitors and laptops, stand somewhere on the border. In three to six years, we should expect only a gradual development, with the fact that it will arrive in premium devices only a few years later. And this at a time when these displays will already be quite common, as in mixed reality glasses or vehicle infotainment displays.

In the mobile world, even in the medium term, OLED display technology will continue to dominate.
