A key day for the future of Mexican soccer is approaching, the day the changes will become official: the end of the era of Yon de Luisa and the beginning of that of Juan Carlos Rodríguez.
Hand in hand with the new leader, who worked for many years as an important executive of Televisa, several changes are also expected in the structure of the Mexican Soccer Federation and Liga MX.
All these changes are derived from the dismal sports results obtained the previous year, as a result of not qualifying for the U-20 World Cup and the 2024 Paris Olympic Games in both categories, crowned with the elimination of the 2022 Qatar World Cup in the phase groups, which had not happened since the 1978 World Cup in Argentina.
Given this, Yon de Luisa decided not to stand for re-election, so Juan Carlos Rodríguez, a man very close to Emilio Azcárraga, will take office with the great mission of making those bad moments forget.
There has been talk that Rodríguez would be a kind of high commissioner of Mexican soccer, but in the end he makes sure that everything will remain the same, since he will be the top leader, although in a matter of National Teams there would be less interference.
This will be clarified next Monday, when the Liga MX Assembly is held.
After the appointment of the new president, which seems to not take long, the most complicated question will come, which will be to approve the changes that will be presented.
There are sports and administrative proposals; Within the former is the return of promotion and relegation, as well as a more drastic reduction of foreigners and the elimination of the repechage. Among the administrative ones is the issue of globalizing the transmission rights of the clubs, as well as the regulation of financial Fair Play so that there is not so much economic inequality.
The reality is that new times are coming for Mexican soccer. These are expected to be a “bomb” that actually changes the current course.
