The Future of Gaming: Larian CEO Swen Vincke Speaks Out Against Subscription Monopoly

In response to Ubisoft CEO Philippe Tremblay’s recent statements that players need to get used to not owning their games, Larian CEO Swen Vincke has stepped in to voice his opinion on the matter.

In a Twitter/X thread, it is clear that Vincke believes that the future of the industry is not going to be bright if it is dominated by a subscription monopoly. “It’s going to be much harder to get good content if subscription becomes the dominant model and a select group gets to decide what goes on the market and what doesn’t,” he writes. “Direct from developer to players is the way to go.”

Vincke goes on to explain that if subscriptions become the norm, games will become a cost/benefit analysis to a much greater extent than today. Vincke also points out that it will be even more difficult to be discovered in a sea of subscription titles than it is today. It’s entirely possible that in a subscription-only world we won’t see anything like Baldur’s Gate III, at least if Vincke’s thinking is to be followed.

Do you agree with Swen Vincke?
