Replace coal, natural gas and petroleum with hydrogen
hydrogen is the missing piece of the puzzle of the energy transition and central to the energy supply of the future. With hydrogen we can store energy from wind and sun and even transport it over long distances. Hydrogen will soon replace fossil fuels in industry, for example coal in steel production. In addition, hydrogen can be processed into climate-friendly fuels (e-fuels) for ships, aircraft and vehicles.
That’s why we want to make Germany a hydrogen republic. The National Hydrogen Strategy ensures greater clarity and planning security. You can read how hydrogen can be produced, transported and used in our FAQ.
Replicating the interior of the sun on Earth using the future energy of fusion
Fusion is the huge opportunity to solve all our energy problems. When atomic nuclei are heated enough to fuse, fusion energy is released. This is how the sun works. The principle itself is simple, but a lot of research is still needed to build and operate fusion power plants.
That’s why it encourages BMBFResearch on fusion in Germany and Europe. The position paper on fusion research is the basis for a new funding program that brings science and industry together. We want to invest massively and in a technology-neutral way in Fusion – a total of over a billion euros in the next five years.
The energy mix of the future consists of renewable energies, hydrogen and fusion
The energy transition requires electricity from renewable energies and innovative future energies alike. Because the energy demand in Germany will continue to rise. As a ministry of opportunity, we make future energies possible – with research into hydrogen technologies and fusion.
