The Future of Electricity in the Czech Republic: Seven-Fold Increase in Solar Capacity by 2027

Within seven years, the new installed capacity for generating electricity from the sun could thus reach seven times the capacity of the Temelín Nuclear Power Plant.

This follows from a study by the consulting company Deloitte for the Union of Modern Energy, which was presented by Miroslav Lopour from the Deloitte company on Thursday at the Ministry of the Environment. According to him, it will be possible to use 213 billion crowns from the Modernization Fund, into which money flows from the sale of emission allowances. “Last year, a household with photovoltaics with an output of 7.5 kilowatts saved one monthly salary in the amount of 35,000 crowns,” he said.

In terms of production, however, photovoltaics would lag behind Temelín, which, with the exception of shutdowns, produces electricity continuously, photovoltaics only a little more than a thousand hours a year.

Another 530 billion crowns will go to strengthening the transmission system and building battery storage facilities, according to Lopour.

According to the study, between 2030 and 2035, an additional 12.7 gigawatts of power in photovoltaics and 2.5 GW of power in wind farms can be created.

Deloitte Chief Economist David Marek said that by 2030, household incomes can increase by 145 billion crowns thanks to the construction of renewable resources. According to him, the increase in production will increase by 721 billion and 34 thousand new jobs will be created.

The Minister of the Environment, Petr Hladík (KDU-ČSL), repeated that the production of electricity from coal in the Czech Republic, as in other European countries, is slowly coming to an end. “The future is only renewable sources and gas,” he pointed out.

The director of the State Environmental Fund of the Czech Republic, Petr Valdman, summarized that the photovoltaic boom continues despite the fact that electricity prices have been falling in recent months. “In the framework of the New Green Savings subsidy program, 90,000 applicants have already received support,” he said.

Martin Sedlák, program director of the Association of Modern Energy, said that if photovoltaics produce 17 terawatt-hours of electricity in 2030, it will correspond to last year’s consumption of all households in the Czech Republic.

Photovoltaics with a total output of about 2.5 GW are now installed in the Czech Republic. Last year alone, according to the Solar Association, as a result of people’s efforts to fight high energy prices, there were almost 34,000 more, and their installed power increased by almost 300 MW. That is, similar to the output of a coal-fired power plant block.
