Chechnya’s leader Ramzan Kadyrov (46) is trying to deny rumors that he is sick and dying, and it is believed that he is trying to convince Vladimir Putin (70) that one of his sons should take over the leadership of Chechnya. A video of Kadyrov’s son Adam (15), who beats a detainee, creates debate in Russia, but Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov refuses to comment on the case. Inna Sangadzhieva of the Helsinki Committee questions who will take over from Kadyrov, whether the new leader will use as much violence and get as much financial support from Moscow. view more

At the same time, a video, in which his son Adam (15) beats up an arresting officer, is the big talking point in Russia. Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov refuses to comment on the matter.

It was Kadyrov himself who posted the video – where he states that he is proud of what his son did. He later claimed that he did not know that Adam, who does boxing, was alone with the man, who is accused of setting the Koran on fire.

Inna Sangadzhieva of the Helsinki Committee takes a stand when VG asks what will happen when Kadyrov is gone as leader of the republic in the Caucasus. She asks three questions:

Who will take over from him? Will the new leader be given the opportunity to use as much violence? Will the new leader receive the same amount of money from Moscow?

Ramzan Kadyrov was 30 years old when he was told by Vladimir Putin that she could take over as Chechnya’s strongman. Three years earlier, his father, Akhmad, who was then president, had been blown to pieces in an assassination attempt at the football stadium in the capital, Grozny.

Ramzan Kadyrov posted a picture of himself walking and wrote that he was healthy and fast. Photo: Kadyrov’s Telegram channel Ukrainian intelligence claimed last weekend that Kadyrov was in a coma. Then a video appeared on his Telegram channel where he was walking in the rain. Then rumors began to circulate that his entourage had been seen at a well-known hospital for the peaks in Moscow. New video on Kadyrov’s Telegram channel: This time with Chechnya – the boss visiting a sick uncle in the same hospital.

– It is very interesting to see what happens on the day Kadyrov is gone, says Inna Sangadzhieva.

– After he has ruled Chechnya with a heavy hand for 16 years, there are many who are dissatisfied and want to celebrate the day he is gone. And wants the Kadyrov clan away from the leadership of the republic.

– Men?

– But Ramzan Kadyrov clearly has other plans. In March, his 17-year-old son suddenly had an audience with Vladimir Putin in Moscow. It could hardly be interpreted in any other way than that Kadyrov is thinking about who will take over after him. And that the Kadyrov family will continue to rule.

– Kadyrov’s daughters, nephews and other relatives have long since been placed in key positions in the republic. He wants to convince Putin that a Kadyrov will continue to govern Chechnya, says Inna Sangadzhieva.

Since Russia’s full-scale attack on Ukraine began on February 24, 2022, Ramzan Kadyrov has become a familiar face in the West because of his fanatical support for the war and for Putin.

He has urged Putin to use nuclear weapons and said he will send his three sons to the front.

But the eldest son Akhmad (17) appeared in the Kremlin – and not at the front.

Putin and Chechnya

Chechnya has great symbolic value for Russian President Vladimir Putin. Putin built his reputation as a tough and effective leader on the victory in the second Chechen war. It happened after his predecessor Boris Yeltsin suffered a humiliating defeat in the first Chechen war. Show more

He has brothers Adam (15) and Zelimkhan (16), according to Radio Free Europe.

In a video on Kadyrov’s Telegram channel, an old video of Adam cheering up a detainee suspected of setting fire to the Koran is shown.

Sangadzhieva senses that Putin is already getting into trouble with Kadyrov and his soldiers in Ukraine.

– Why?

– Because his forces in Ukraine risk having to fight alongside those they previously fought against in the Chechen wars. Putin has given Kadyrov complete free rein to rule Chechnya as he wishes. But can the Kremlin continue like this? asks Sangadzhieva.

Professor emeritus Kristian Gerner at Lund University expresses himself clearly:

– Kadyrov has been Putin’s torpedo in Chechnya. President Putin has stood behind Kadyrov’s harsh rule and fully supported him. They also have a strong personal relationship.

– What happens now?

– Putin had Kadyrov and Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin as his two toughest supporters. He has already lost Prigozhin. Now he could lose another one.

The Chechen leader’s children receive a lot of attention on Chechnya’s own TV channel, and they are constantly receiving awards and major tasks.

– It serves as a warning to others with political ambitions that power will remain with the Kadyrov family, says Chechen political analyst Ruslan Kutayev, according to Radio Free Europe.

He says Kadyrov’s death could set off a power struggle that Vladimir Putin and the Kremlin will try hard to control.

A famous Russian Telegram channel speculates about the fact that Kadyrov’s plane was in Moscow for many days and also points out that security around the hospital was stepped up.

Ksenija Sobchak, the daughter of Putin’s mentor Anatoly Sobchak, reports that she has been in contact with Kadyrov, and that he warned her not to mention the case of 15-year-old Adam beating up a detainee.
