The Future of Brakes: Electrification and the Rise of Electric Disc Brakes

Electric parking brakes are becoming more common in cars, and the electrification of foot brakes is also on the horizon. Electric disc brakes, which do not mechanically connect the pedals and brakes, are likely to bring about an amazing change in ride comfort.

Parking brakes are electric. What’s next?

In the automobile world, electric parking brakes are becoming more and more popular, and an increasing number of light vehicles are now using them. Furthermore, the electrification of foot brakes appears to be nearing realization.

“Japan Mobility Show (JMS) 2023″ in autumn 2023. At the booth of Aisin, a major auto parts company, many products essential for the electrification of automobiles were on display, including eAxle, thermal management systems, aluminum battery frames, Gigacast, regenerative cooperative braking, and aerodynamic devices. One exhibit that was particularly interesting was the “electric disc brake,” which is attracting attention as a next-generation brake.

The company in charge of development was Advics, a company within the Aisin Group. The company was established in 2001 by integrating the brake divisions of Aisin Seiki, Denso, Sumitomo Electric Industries, and Toyota Motor Corporation, and is one of Japan’s leading brake system manufacturers. Advics is developing electric disc brakes in anticipation of the arrival of full-scale autonomous driving and the age of electrification.

Electric disc brakes replace the conventional hydraulic brake mechanism with an electric direct-acting type. Specifically, the operating status of the brake pedal is converted into an electrical signal, and this information is judged by the ECU (car computer) to operate the electric actuator and control the braking force.

In the past, the force used to press the pedal was amplified by hydraulic pressure, thereby obtaining strong braking force, but this mechanical connection between the pedal and brake is no longer necessary, and everything is replaced with electrical signals. .For example, a system in which steering wheel operations are converted into electrical signals is called “steer-by-wire,” and electric disc brakes are, so to speak, a “brake-by-wire” braking system.
