Forward Alexis Lafrenière ended his entry-level National Hockey League contract this year and so far hasn’t convinced the New York Rangers to make a long-term commitment to him, so the next few months will be decisive for its future.
Some observers, including Sportsnet network expert Elliotte Friedman, are curious to see what the Blueshirts will decide in the case of the 21-year-old Quebecer. Having the status of free agent with compensation, Lafrenière should logically sign a transition contract and thus not change address, at least, for the moment.
“If you trade it now, it will be with a low value. So it’s best to try to fix the problem and that’s what prompted them to bet on [Peter] Laviolette and [Michael] Peca. They hope they will play an important role here,” Friedman commented during the “32 Thoughts” podcast, referring to the head coach and associate coach of the Rangers respectively.
Then, the journalist made the parallel between the native of Saint-Eustache and one of his teammates who is also a free agent with compensation.
“There are people who said they wanted to see the Montreal Canadiens submit a hostile offer to K’Andre Miller. In my opinion, this is just speculation. Of course, that didn’t happen. It will be a transitional agreement for Miller, if it is also the case for Lafrenière”, he evaluated.
In 2022-2023, the first pick of the 2020 draft had 39 points, including 16 goals, in 81 games. In the first-round series against the New Jersey Devils, he hasn’t scored a single point in seven games. The Rangers have about $6.1 million under the salary cap.
