Comedian and screenwriter Pernille Haaland (33) may not be a familiar face to “the whole” of Norway, but the vast majority of people will probably roll their eyes when they hear or read her surname.
She shares a surname with football star Erling Braut Haaland (23).

The comedian, who has been seen in TV 2’s “Kokkeskolen” recently, is often asked about the connection to the football talent and whether they are related or not.
Now Pernille Haaland tells the story of her famous surname.
– Do you score a lot?
Nettavisen met the Norwegian-British comedian earlier this autumn during the premiere party for “Kokkeskolen”, and the 33-year-old could tell that the first question she usually gets after an introduction is:
– Do you score a lot? I always get that question in England, she says to Nettavisen.

It is not surprising that she is asked that question since Erling Braut Haaland, or “the bull from Jæren” as he is also called, is known worldwide. He is considered one of the biggest profiles in football, and the 23-year-old plays for both Manchester City and the Norwegian national team.
But the 33-year-old is somewhat uncertain about exactly what relationship the comedian and the footballer actually have:
– So, I don’t know if we are related. I don’t think we are, but everyone asks me, she says.
With such a well-known surname, she often hears it, and she jokes that she is now considering taking a DNA test. But at the same time she acknowledges that she lives well in the ignorance of whether they are actually related or not.
– Imagine if I find myself marrying him. Then I don’t have to change my surname, she jokes.
Braut Haaland comes from Bryne, while Pernille Haaland has roots from Southern Norway. In addition, the 23-year-old is in a relationship with Isabel Haugseng Johansen.
Haaland benefits
The comedian says she is not tired of the questions connected to her surname, and the link to the football talent is something she often uses in her job as a stand-up comedian.
She does not hide that there are obviously some advantages to the Haaland name.
– When I’m in England doing stand-up, I usually say that everyone should change their name to Haaland. Especially if you visit Manchester, because then you suddenly get upgrades at hotels and the like, she says with a laugh.
– I mess with it a lot. It is a gift, she adds.

Although Pernille Haaland shares a surname with “the bull from Jæren”, they have quite different backgrounds. The 33-year-old grew up in England with Norwegian parents.
Haaland is educated at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London, but it is as comedian Haaland has remarked. The 33-year-old has performed on a number of stages in London, and she has toured Europe with her solo show “Resting Confused Face”.
But his stand-up career in England, on the other hand, was abruptly put on hold when the pandemic ravaged the world three years ago, and Haaland was more or less forced to move to Norway.
– There was a pandemic and I couldn’t work as a stand-up comedian, it was absolutely awful. I think everyone had a great time during the pandemic, but I didn’t know what to do, she says.
– People think I’m a bit strange
The comedian has managed to make a name for himself in the Norwegian comedy industry, and in recent years has also made a name for himself on stages in this country. But it turned out to be a transition to go from a stand-up comedian in London to Oslo.
As Haaland grew up in England and has grown up with English as her mother tongue, it was not as easy to keep her tongue straight when she started doing standup in Norwegian.
– It was a bit strange at first, but then it got better. But sometimes I switch a bit, suddenly it’s English and suddenly it’s a bit Norwegian, she says and adds:
– People probably think I’m a bit weird, but it’s fine.
In addition to being a stand-up comedian, Haaland has also been successful as a screenwriter, and together with Iselin Guttormsen (36) they have written the comedy show “One Night Stand”, which the 36-year-old is current with these days.
But it does not seem that Pernille Haaland has any intention of slowing down here in Norway. Now she is writing a new show with Janne Formoe (48), and she will soon go on tour with Anne Kat-Hærland (51).
