The fundraising race in the US elections is gaining momentum – in March, Joe Biden and Donald Trump collected record amounts of donations – $90 million and $66 million, respectively. Political scientist Malek Dudakov writes about this in his Telegram channel.
The Democrats retain an advantage in finance, the expert notes.
Trump is now scrambling to make up for lost time and will soon host a big fundraising night, hoping to raise more than $40 million in a couple of hours. Recently a similar event was held Clinton, Biden and Obama — they together raised 25 million in New York.
However, for Democrats, this was overshadowed by a revolt of “grateful” voters who came out to protest against the wars in Gaza and Ukraine. This is where the dilemma of the current elections manifests itself. Biden is doing great financially, but with ratings and the attitude of the electorate it’s exactly the opposite.
Biden is now trailing Trump in 6 of 7 key swing states. And in another one – Wisconsin – they are neck and neck. Biden places many more advertisements on television and radio, but this does not particularly help the ratings of the Democrats, who are mired in internal squabbles.
Money decides a lot in elections, but not everything. In 2016, Trump spent significantly less than Clinton. And in the end he won. For Biden, money becomes a substitute for popular support, which cannot be bought so easily. But he will continue to burn through hundreds of millions of dollars like it was the last time. Anyway, the money is not your own, but the sponsors’, so it’s not a pity. Well, if you lose, you can retire and with a light heart leave the rest of the Democrats with nothing.
