Theater has the ability to be a mirror of society – depicting or referring to current events and problems. However, there is also a commercial aspect – the theater hall must be filled so that thanks to more profitable projects, more serious and deeper performances can be staged. How do you see this function of the theater, does the theater currently serve as a mirror of society?
Agnes Logina: It seems to me that this is one way to look at art in general – that it is a mirror of current events and a barometer of what is happening in society. What seems extremely important to me is that art, its works and events provide a platform and also tools for reflection on what is happening. It is a two-way process, not that you are only offered your own version of current affairs and how we all live today, but also gives you the opportunity to reflect on it yourself.
One of the most important functions of art is to create fertile ground for reflection. What I am pointing to is that it is not only a one-way process “from above”, but you as a viewer are involved in it and share responsibility for how this interpretation arises and how you actually read the work.
It is difficult for me to talk about what has happened in the theater during the past season, because I myself have experienced it in diametrically different roles. As a spectator who went to various theater events at that time, not as intensively as I would have liked, I had my own current events and ideas; but now – as a minister – I look at this system differently. Therefore, I don’t know if I can single out any works that are particularly significant at the moment. That wouldn’t be quite right.
