Gunawardena told reporters on Tuesday that Rajapaksa is not in hiding, but the date of his return is unknown. The former leader fled Sri Lanka after mass unrest due to the economic crisis. Many protesters claim that he has been reckless with public finances, leading to a sharp rise in the prices of basic necessities.

Rajapaksa fled Sri Lanka to the Maldives on July 13, before traveling to Singapore on July 14. Shortly after arriving in Singapore, he tendered his resignation, which was formally accepted by the Sri Lankan cabinet on 15 July.

The former president was traveling with his wife and two bodyguards. He is no longer entitled to legal immunity. Singapore says the ex-president did not apply for political asylum when he arrived.
