As Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated in his nightly address, on Tuesday, January 31, another meeting was held with the military leadership and intelligence services to discuss ways to prevent Russian success on the battlefield. Zelensky emphasized that the task is not only to prevent Russia from retaliating, but also to make the occupying forces lose any hope of future aggression.
Commenting on the news about the attacks of the Russian forces, the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, Oleksiy Danilov, has stated that he does not rule out any scenario in the next two to three weeks, expressing his belief that the decisive battles are still ahead. He admitted that Russia is preparing for maximum escalation, all possible forces are gathered, trainings and exercises are conducted. Danilov believes that the next two to three months will be decisive, but with the support of the West, Ukraine will definitely win.
The US is preparing a new aid package for Ukraine. Its value would exceed 2.2 billion dollars and for the first time it would also include missiles with a range of 150 kilometers.
According to Reuters, citing American officials, this aid package is expected to be announced at the end of the week. Additional equipment for Patriot air defense systems, as well as high-precision ammunition and Javelin anti-tank weapons, are to be sent to Ukraine. Part of the funding comes from a fund called the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, which allows the administration of the US president to receive weapons directly from manufacturers rather than from the US arms stockpile.
General Atomics has announced that it is ready to sell two Reaper MQ9 combat drones to Ukraine for one dollar each. This could help Ukraine defend against an impending Russian attack. The information found on the Internet shows that the price of one such unmanned aircraft is about 32 million dollars, in addition, Ukraine would need to pay for the delivery of aircraft worth about 10 million dollars, as well as about 8 million dollars annually for the maintenance of these aircraft. Neither the US nor the Ukrainian government has commented on such an offer. However, this example shows very well how much it costs not only to purchase modern weapons, but also to maintain them.
Meanwhile, Greece has announced that it will not send its Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine. Greek Prime Minister Kiriakos Mitsotakis has stated that these tanks are absolutely necessary to guarantee the defense of Greece itself.
These statements by Greece differ from other Western countries, which have either already promised to send Western-made tanks to Kyiv or are still considering it. On the other hand, the Polish government has promised to train Ukrainian soldiers to work with “Leopard 2” within five weeks – this is about twice as short a period as traditionally used. Representatives of the Polish Armed Forces have reminded that not only tank drivers will be trained, but also crews and mechanics.
