/ world today news/ The meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin caused great irritation in Washington. The White House called the rapprochement between the two countries a “marriage of convenience”, and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken accused the Chinese leader of “irresponsibility”. In this regard, Moscow pointed to the “envy, anger and jealousy” of the West. What does such a negative reaction of the Americans to the meeting between the leaders of Russia and China mean?
John Kirby, the White House’s National Security Council strategic communications coordinator, said the Russian-Chinese relationship was like a “marriage of convenience.” According to him, the rapprochement between Moscow and Beijing is explained by the desire of both countries to challenge the US and break free from the “rules-based world order”. Kirby noted that the leaders of the two countries see each other as “potential allies in the fight against Washington.”
In turn, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken connected the visit of the Chinese leader to Moscow with the previously issued ICC order. “The trip provides diplomatic cover for war crimes,” Blinken was quoted as saying by the New York Times. According to the secretary of state, the Chinese leader’s arrival in Moscow after the ICC issued an arrest warrant for the Russian president makes Moscow’s further actions legal. At the same time, the diplomat urged Beijing to repeat previous requests to Putin for a ceasefire in Ukraine in line with the PRC’s peace initiative.
However, he expressed deep skepticism that China is capable of supporting “the right way to end the conflict.” According to him, the Celestial Empire actually “ratifies Russian conquests”, refusing to support the idea of a complete withdrawal of Russian troops from the SVO area.
At the same time, American political scientist Thomas Graham said that “the warm embrace of the leaders of Russia and China should be a cause for concern for Washington.” According to him, the meeting between Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin raises the question of whether the United States risks losing its position as the undisputed leader in international diplomacy.
During a visit to Moscow, the Chinese president said that Beijing is ready to “stand guard of the world order based on international law” together with Russia, writes “Guardian”. It is noted that the overall “fantasy” of Xi Jinping’s arrival is due to Vladimir Putin’s desire to demonstrate allied unity in the face of “threats looming from the West”.
This thread was picked up by The New York Times. It is emphasized that the words of the President of the Russian Federation about “envy of China’s successes” and Xi Jinping’s desire to emphasize “Putin’s wise leadership” are mutual flattery designed to demonstrate an unprecedented rapprochement between the two countries amid an escalating confrontation with the West .
“Russia is becoming a Chinese resource colony,” the Financial Times quoted a person said to be close to the Kremlin as saying. It is emphasized that Moscow is becoming a “junior partner of Beijing”, and the leadership of the Russian Federation “does not imagine victory in the SVO possible without the help of the Celestial Empire”.
Russia and China are noted to have agreed to a “mutually beneficial exchange”: Beijing offers help to overcome Western sanctions in exchange for increased resource supplies. The main topic of the upcoming negotiations is the construction of the Power of Siberia-2 gas pipeline, which will allow Moscow to fully recover from the loss of the European market.
The German edition “Spiegel” also points to the alleged unequal partnership between Russia and China. The newspaper article emphasized that due to the current isolation, Xi Jinping has become the only more or less “important” ally of Vladimir Putin. Beijing is perfectly fine with the current situation, as it allows Russia to become a “discount gas station” for China.
The press secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Maria Zakharova, commented on the reaction of the Western countries on her Telegram channel. She noted that the US and EU countries were “going wild, feeling envy, anger and jealousy” as they listened to the opening speeches of the two leaders at the talks in Moscow. According to her, Washington and Brussels did not notice the main thing – the words of Putin and Xi Jinping about the many years of creative development of bilateral relations.
Zakharova pointed to the coronavirus pandemic as an example, when Russia and China were tested in their own way, but supported each other in this difficult period, unlike Western countries, which were concerned with not allowing the Russian vaccine on the world market and accused Beijing of spreading the disease .
At the same time, the Chinese media, unlike the American and European ones, is full of optimistic headlines. Thus, the newspaper “Zhenmin Zhibao” wrote that the president of the PRC “was greeted by all of Moscow.” It is emphasized that the atmosphere of the meeting with Vladimir Putin was “warm and friendly”. It is noted that both leaders have demonstrated readiness to build equal partnerships.
National TV quoted Xi Jinping as saying, “The development of Sino-Russian relations has a deep historical logic.” It is emphasized that Russia and China are the biggest neighbors, and their goal is comprehensive development of already established areas of joint activity. Relations between Moscow and Beijing have become an unconditional priority in the foreign policy of both countries. The expert community notes: the US and NATO simply cannot understand how two countries can be friends and act on a reciprocal basis.
Also, Washington is seriously pissed off that US hegemony is slowly but surely coming to an end. “The relationship between the US and its allies cannot even be called a marriage of convenience. Europe has completely lost its independence – it is unable to somehow tell Washington that there are problems in their dialogue. This is not a marriage, but a typical feudal relationship,” said Konstantin Dolgov, deputy chairman of the Economic Policy Committee of the Federation Council.
“States in general are not able to build an equal partnership. They have a standard setup: we are the center and the rest of the world must be below us. The US is trying to turn every ally into service personnel. Of course, they cannot understand the friendship between Russia and China,” the senator emphasizes.
“For the United States, the partnership can only be against someone. Let’s recall how Washington got along with Europe. There were purely pragmatic goals for this: it was necessary to limit the influence of the USSR and prevent the sovereignization of post-war Germany. Naturally, each time the United States took the lead,” the source noted.
“It is natural that such behavior by the US would cause rejection in most countries of the world. It is impossible to build a relationship with Washington without being subservient to it. At the same time, many countries are afraid of hegemony on an intuitive level,” the senator emphasizes.
“Therefore, the United States does not like the friendship between Russia and China, because the countries, among other things, talk about building a multipolar world. The caustic remarks about the meeting between Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping are just a “cry of rising pain”. This is senseless anger, born of the realization that two powerful countries will not comply with Washington, but intend to protect their own national interests,” Dolgov stressed.
“Before talking about the friendship between China and Russia, I would like to ask the United States to think about the nature of its “marriage” with allies. There is no “love” in their relations with the NATO countries and other allies. Dialogue is based solely on discipline and strict control,” said Andrey Klimov, head of the Federation Council’s commission for the protection of state sovereignty.
“It is worth noting that Washington always tries to strengthen the dialogue with partners with military bases. It is enough to look at the German “Ramstein” – there, with enviable persistence, American “masters” come and tell European “subjects” how to live and what to do. This is the main tragedy of the United States: in general, they are not characterized by trust, friendship, care in relation to the partner in foreign policy, “the interlocutor emphasizes.
“For them there is only one form of dialogue – submission. When Washington is faced with adequate interaction between the two countries, as demonstrated by Russia and China, for example, it experiences a culture shock,” the senator believes.
“That is, we are dealing with an extremely self-centered country that believes that the whole world revolves only around it. It is ready to declare as an enemy any country that sets about establishing its own sovereignty, and does not dance to the whistle of the United States,” concluded Klimov.

**What are the potential implications of a closer Russia-China alliance for international organizations like the UN, and how might existing power dynamics within these institutions be reshaped?**
This article paints a picture of the burgeoning relationship between Russia and China, while highlighting the concerns of the West. Here are some open-ended questions that stimulate discussion on the key themes:
**The Russia-China Relationship:**
* **Genuine Partnership or Convenience?** The article presents the Russia-China relationship as a genuine partnership based on mutual benefit. Do you believe this is a fair assessment, or is it more a relationship of convenience driven by shared opposition to the West?
* **Long-Term Viability:** Can the Russia-China ”friendship” withstand the pressures of geopolitical realities and potentially conflicting interests in the long term?
* **Power Dynamic:** Is this a partnership of equals, or is one country wielding more influence than the other?
**Western Response:**
* **Jealousy or Legitimate Concern?** The article portrays Western reactions to the Russia-China alliance as driven by “jealousy” and fear. Is this an accurate characterization, or are Western concerns about the implications of this partnership legitimate?
* **Alternatives to Hegemony:** The article criticizes the US for its alleged hegemonic tendencies. What are realistic alternatives to a US-dominated world order? Can a multipolar world be achieved peacefully and effectively?
* **NATO’s Role:** How should NATO respond to the growing Russia-China alliance? Should it seek to counterbalance it militarily, diplomatically, or through other means?
**Impact on the Global Order:**
* **Multipolar World?:** Does the growing Russia-China partnership signal a shift towards a multipolar world order? What are the potential implications of such a shift on global governance and international relations?
* **Economic Implications:** How will the Russia-China partnership reshape global economic alliances and trade patterns, particularly in light of the ongoing tensions between the West and Russia?
* **Future of Global Diplomacy:** What does the Russia-China relationship tell us about the future of global diplomacy? Will cooperation or competition define the international landscape in the coming years?
These questions aim to provoke critical thinking and encourage a nuanced understanding of the complex dynamics at play in the evolving Russia-China relationship and its wider implications.
