CORONAVIRUS – He was hospitalized on January 23 at Pellegrin hospital in Bordeaux for suspicion of coronavirus. Laurent Chu, a 49-year-old man, is the first patient reported and identified in France, “even if studies carried out in the hospitals of Bobigny and Colmar suggest that the virus was already circulating in France from December, even November”, recalls The Parisian.

“I would prefer to be known as a world ski champion, rather than as the first French person to be infected,” he laughs with our colleagues who met him almost a year after his stay in hospital. But that’s how it was, one had to be… it’s me ”.

For Laurent Chu, it all started on January 24, upon his return from a trip to Wuhan in China, his hometown, and cradle of the epidemic. “On the spot (…) we speak very little about the virus, the local authorities say that it is not serious. When I take off, Wuhan is still living in complete freedom. When I land, she’s confined. ”.

Everything then speeds up. He developed the first symptoms and very quickly found himself hospitalized. “We discovered the disease with him, he clearly helped research to progress, explains to Parisian Doctor Duc Nguyen, who was in his 40s.

“These 22 days in hospital have been trying”

If he is very grateful to the doctors, Laurent Chu remembers a difficult period. “For me, these 22 days in hospital were trying, the confinement, the anxiety of novelty, he confides. I lost 5 kg, then three ”.

Faced with his doctor, patient zero finally asks, amused: “As I was the first infected, I would like to be the first vaccinated in France, what do you say?”. Not certain, however, that he is one of the priority people.

In a press release published on Saturday, December 19, the High Authority for Health considered that there was no need in France to systematically vaccinate people already infected with the coronavirus. She specifies, however, that nothing is against it if they wish. Laurent Chu should therefore wait his turn.
