The French Wine Surplus: Excess Wine and Changing Tastes Lead to Increased Destruction

Aug 26, 2023 at 10:24 AM Update: an hour ago

France has an excess of wine in its stomach. The surplus has grown considerably in the past year, so that more wine has to be destroyed. The French Ministry of Agriculture is therefore releasing tens of millions more for its destruction.

The growing wine surplus is a result of the changing taste of the French. Nowadays they drink more and more specialty beer, while farmers continue to produce the same amount of wine. According to Eurostat, the French drank 15 percent less wine in the period from January to June than last year.

As a result, more wine remains in the wine cellars, while a new harvest is coming. The French government steps in to buy up and destroy those surpluses. The budget for this will be increased by 40 million euros to 200 million.

The alcohol from the destroyed wine is used, for example, for cleaning products and perfume. Furthermore, millions are available for winegrowers who want to switch to another branch of sport, such as growing olives.

“The wine industry must look ahead to what consumers want and adapt,” said Agriculture Minister Marc Fesneau BBC News.
