Former France star David Trezeguet has admitted Sunday’s 2022 FIFA World Cup final will be “difficult on a personal level” as he suffers from confusion between his loyalty to the France national team, with whom he previously won the Cup title of the World, and its Argentinean roots.
Trezeguet, the former Juventus star, suffers from a state of disarray regarding his allegiance to the two countries, but believes Argentine captain Lionel Messi deserves and needs to win the World Cup more than French striker Kylian Mbappe.
Paris Saint-Germain star Messi, 35, is looking for his first World Cup title, while his French teammate, Kylian Mbappe, is looking forward to winning the World Cup for a second consecutive time.
Trezeguet told Argentine television network TYC on Saturday: “I repeat it constantly, for me on an emotional level, bearing in mind that it is his last participation in the World Cup. Leo deserves to be a hero. He makes people dream. This does not decrease.” France’s ambition to retain the title.
He underlined: France arrived to win the world title, there is no doubt about that, therein lies the age difference, Leo is at the end of his career, Mbappé is just starting out and will reach all records.
He explained: Together with Paris Saint-Germain they form a fantastic duo, but Argentina plays for Messi, everything goes through him.
She continued: It’s a difficult situation on a personal level, on an emotional level something I didn’t want to, but it’s a celebration and a great ending. It’s what we all expected given the facts and history, they are the two best teams in the World Cup.
Trezeguet won the 1998 World Cup with the Roosters, having preferred to play for France, the country of his birth, rather than play for Argentina, where his parents lived.
