According to an Ifop survey for HelloMyBusiness, 93% of French people believe that the home delivery profession should see its status “aligned with the working conditions of employees”…
(Boursier.com) — How are home delivery people considered? While home delivery has experienced a real explosion in recent years, a survey conducted by Ifop for HelloMyBuisness has analyzed the view that the French have on these workers, most of whom are employed by major platforms such as Uber. Eats or Deliveroo, and their working conditions.
While delivery people have a precarious self-employed status, with difficult working conditions, “an overwhelming majority of French people (93%) believe that the profession of home delivery person should see its status aligned with the working conditions of employees, as is for example the case in Spain since August 2021”, underlines the study carried out with a sample of 1,011 people, representative of the French population aged 18 and over.
As a reminder, last year, the Spanish government forced companies to pay delivery workers who until now were self-employed, thus becoming the first European country to go so far to regulate the activity of large platforms. A decision which had also pushed Deliveroo to pack up.
A recognized hardship
Pending such developments in France, the survey reveals that 80% of those questioned would be ready to pay more for their delivery service so that the delivery person has better working conditions, and 78% would agree to pay more money for better pay.
The arduous nature of their job is widely recognized. Indeed, 90% of respondents believe that delivery workers are poorly paid, 83% think it is a “stressful” job. It would even be “dangerous” for 73% of French people. The image attributed to delivery people is very positive: 89% of respondents think they are “efficient”, 89% “courageous” and 81% “friendly”.
Note that this study, published in June, follows the condemnation of Deliveroo last April. The meal delivery platform and three of its former leaders have been convicted of having thousands of officially independent delivery people work under a subordinate relationship.
Nearly one in two French people have already been a customer of home food delivery
In addition, the survey underlines that nearly one in two French people (44%) has already been a customer of home food delivery (and even 62% of those under 35). One in four use it at least once a month (23%).
Finally, if a good third of French people (37%) claim to be delivered more often today than before the first confinement, a majority have returned to their habits preceding this period.
