Traveling to the United States, the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin made a point of recalling, in an interview with AFP, that “for Europeans and for France, the primary risk is Sunni Islamist terrorism”.
Gérald Darmanin was on an official trip to the United States, with the aim of increasing police and judicial cooperation between France and the United States, provided for in a 2016 agreement, for the fight against terrorism and serious crime.
The Minister of the Interior explained that his presence across the Atlantic was motivated by the desire to “recall that for Europeans and for France, the primary risk is Sunni Islamist terrorism and that anti-terrorist collaboration between intelligence services is absolutely essestial.”
Essential cooperation ahead of the 2024 Games
If Gérald Darmanin estimated that “the risk resumes”, he did not however mention specific threats. Thus, during this two-day visit to Washington, New York and the UN, he asked the American government to strengthen anti-terrorist cooperation between France and the United States.
“At a time when Americans may have a more national vision of the protests – white supremacism, repeated shootings, conspiracy – they must not forget what appears to us in Europe as the first threat: Sunni terrorism” , insisted the Minister of the Interior, who particularly deplores the departure of American troops from Afghanistan.
This cooperation is all the more essential in the eyes of the French minister as several large-scale events will be held in France in the months to come, and where security is a major issue.
Among them, the visit of Pope Francis in September, the Rugby World Cup next October, or the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024.
