/ world today news/ Thirty representatives of the world of business, culture and politics have signed a call for France to support the candidacy of the Bulgarian Irina Bokova for the post of UN Secretary General.
Among the signatories of the document are Pierre Bergé, Jean-Pierre Chevenman, Edith Cresson, Jean-Michel Jarre, Julia Krasteva, Catherine Lalumiere.
The call says that 70 years after the creation of the United Nations and 25 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the world is facing unprecedented changes: geopolitical and economic balance shaken by emerging countries, large population growth that is creating the ground for growing inequality in the economy , the social sphere and health care put on the agenda the effective prevention of the human tragedy of refugees; climate changes that require us to rethink our development model; digital communication that can be intercepted or used by terrorists…
Peace, security and tranquility in our societies are borrowed, the initiators point out. In the face of these new challenges for humanity, the need for the UN is glaring, provided it demonstrates its ability to reconfigure itself to maintain its relevance, legitimacy and effectiveness.
Faced with increasing regional crises and tensions, the new UN Secretary-General must focus his efforts on conflict prevention through diplomacy that is open, highly humane and proactive.
No one is better suited to address these critical challenges to our common future than Irina Bokova. A francophone woman who speaks four of the six official languages of the United Nations, twice elected Director-General of UNESCO, a high-class diplomat who succeeded in achieving dialogue between cultures, tolerance and international cultural cooperation.
