The situation is alarming according to the French Blood Establishment, winter viruses and the economic context seem to be causing a drop in blood sampling. Donor mobilization is needed.
The institution of French blood asks a “Population Surprise”, blood supplies are too low to sustain patients. Currently, fewer than 80,000 scholarships are available in France when more than 100,000 are needed.
The explanations put forward by the EFS are various: winter viruses, the difficult socio-economic context, the recovery of the Covid or even the weather conditions. But whatever the cause, the conclusion is the same, according to the president of the EFS, François Toujas, “the situation is particularly worrying, attendance at collections is too low and prospects for the start of the year are poor”.
EFS calls on all eligible citizens to get involved. To be eligible, you must be between the ages of 18 and 70, weigh more than 50 pounds, and your last donation was more than 8 weeks ago.
Reserves of group O negative (universal donor) are particularly low, but are essential in emergencies when the patient’s blood group is not known.
To donate blood just go to the EFS website and in a few clicks you can make an appointment.
