The head of the Free Patriotic Movement, MP Gebran Bassil, indicated in a speech he delivered at the opening of the youth hostel in Jbeil, that “there is a trend among the movement to establish youth hostels. After Batroun, Zgharta, the Chouf, Zahle, and Keserwan, today we are witnessing the opening of the youth hostel in Jbeil, and this is essential.” Because the movement was born from the womb of the Lebanese army and the youth, and we were all children in universities and schools when we dreamed of the Lebanon that General Michel Aoun had drawn for us.”
He pointed out that “with our youthful drive, we faced the world with freedom, sovereignty and independence, and we had no weapon except this slogan, and young people today must see themselves in this slogan because the issues we suffer from require thinking about freedom and sovereignty,” stressing that “we cannot get rid of Of corruption that restricts our decision-making and financial independence, and we cannot live an existential crisis like the crisis of the displaced, without thinking that this is a kind of occupation of our identity, as it is not only important to occupy the land, but the most dangerous thing is when the identity is occupied, because the people who lose their identity lose everything. Including his homeland, his land, all its landmarks, its history and its future.”
Bassil explained, “The movement is at the forefront of these issues, which are corruption and displacement, and their danger is real. The first is to the state and its existence, and the second is to the nation and its existence. It is important for the youth to go in this direction.” He touched on one of the drawings in the youth hostel, which talks about the embezzlement and money laundering committed by the former Governor of the Bank of Lebanon, Riad Salameh. He said: “The cartoons depict how a person robbed a country, not only of its institutions, but more than that, he robbed a people of all their deposits, and how can this tragedy be turned into a game so that none of us forget what Salama did; I do not know if it is normal for the people’s money to be stolen and for them to remain… “Silently.”
He stressed that “the Free Patriotic Movement and Michel Aoun alone fought to complete the criminal audit and recover the funds transferred abroad,” emphasizing that “there are two dangers threatening Lebanon: the first is the Syrian displacement, while the second is what we are witnessing in occupied Palestine, and if we do not know how to deal With these events with great awareness and responsibility, then we will be repeating the mistakes that led us to war.”
He also stated that “the great burden falls on our shoulders to keep the dangers away from us. When they were required to remain silent about the issue of the displaced in order to bring them into Lebanon, they made accusations against us. Rather, they contributed to bringing them into the country and prevented the approval of plans in order to secure the return of these people to Syria,” pointing out that “When the international plan became required to sabotage the social fabric of the region, they began to want from day to day to return the Syrians with violence, incitement and hatred, and this was not a speech because Syria is a neighbor of Lebanon and we must think that we want to live as neighbors in peace and not with hatred, especially since the migration of the Syrians was short.” Because the conditions there were difficult.”
Bassil stated, “Instead of working to secure appropriate conditions for return, the equation has become his survival at the expense of our presence.” Regarding what is happening between Palestine and Israel, he expressed his regret “at the “hostile” expression witnessed on social media towards a rightful Arab cause that concerns Christians and Muslims, and the position of the movement was issued in this regard,” adding: “What is happening today is a war that did not begin and end quickly, and we do not realize that Where will it take us? From here, we in the movement must not live “populism” in such exceptional circumstances.”
He stressed that “it is our responsibility, both the movement and Jbeil, for the Youth House to be a place for meeting, as well as for training young people to understand what are the basic challenges facing us,” hoping that “the movement will remain a movement of youth that is renewed with its generations and ideas.”
