“We have gone through one of the biggest stress tests in history in the form of a coronavirus pandemic,” said Karina Schmidt-Friederich, head of the German Booksellers’ Association.

In 2020, the turnover was stable, and this year provides grounds for confidence.

The turnover in the book market has reached the pre-pandemic level, and after the first 40 weeks it exceeded the indicators of 2019 by 0.7%, Schmidt-Friederihs pointed out.

“Social distancing did not become distancing from books,” she added, noting that the crisis had shown the importance of books in society.

The world’s largest book fair, held annually in Frankfurt, will combine face-to-face events with digital solutions this autumn. It will run until Sunday, October 24th.

All visitors will be required to prove that they have been vaccinated against Covid-19, to have the disease or to have tested negative for Covid-19. The number of visitors will be limited.

Canada will be the guest of honor at the Frankfurt Book Fair this year.

This year, 2,000 publishers and companies from 80 countries will take part in the fair, and more than 300 authors are going to present their books and discuss social issues.

The main theme of the event will be: “How do we want to live?”

Last year, due to the new coronavirus pandemic, no stands were set up in the main halls of the Frankfurt Exhibition Center, where trade fairs usually take place. Due to the pandemic, travel restrictions prevented many participants from coming to Frankfurt. Instead of the traditional format, lectures and readings were organized in several places in the city and various digital events took place.

In 2019, the Frankfurt Book Fair was attended by more than 300,000 people, half of whom were private visitors. 7,450 participants from 104 countries presented their publications.
