The Franconian as a Brazilian: Balance sheet of the Samba Festival Coburg

A weekend full of samba rhythms, dancing people and a good atmosphere lies behind Coburg. The organizers of the 29th International Samba Festival draw a consistently positive conclusion. Around 2,000 artists came to Coburg to celebrate the largest samba festival outside of Brazil, the home of samba. Among them were numerous samba groups from all over the world as well as samba dancers.

Coburg proves itself as a “Samba City”

In the years 2020 and 2021 the festival was canceled due to corona. The number of visitors has decreased slightly compared to 2019, but there are no exact figures yet. Almost 200,000 people came in 2019.

The new concept with a festival area in the castle park instead of the stage in the market square has been a complete success, said Sambaco managing director Rolf Beyersdorf. He announced that there would be another stage at Schlossplatz next year. Coburg’s Lord Mayor Dominik Sauerteig is also full of praise and said: “Our Coburg rightly bears the name Samba City in 2022.”

Samba festival is “cultural highlight” for Söder

The highlights of the festival included the performances by the Brazilian star Carla Visi and the two samba queens Camila Silva and Desiane de Jesus in colorful costumes.

Bavaria’s Prime Minister Markus Söder attended the festival on Saturday, describing the event as a “cultural highlight”. The Franconian turned out to be a secret Brazilian at this festival, according to Söder, who had taken over the patronage. Minister of State for Culture Claudia Roth opened the festival.

The police report is also positive, they speak of a quiet, happy and peaceful festival. Over the course of the three-day festival, officials counted six violations of the Narcotics Act, one dangerous bodily harm and three thefts. A cavalry squadron from Nuremberg and the riot police arrived to support the Coburg forces. According to their own statements, the approximately 200 employees of the BRK had the most to do with providing the drummers with band-aids for the blisters on their fingers.
