The toll is growing in Europe because of the floods. This Friday, July 16, there are 103 dead in Germany, 20 in Belgium and hundreds of people are still missing. In Vaucluse, several towns are twinned with Belgian or German cities. This is the case of Avignon twinned with the town of Wetzlar. A city that is not directly affected by the floods but close to disaster areas. The German community of Vaucluse also closely follows events from our department.
Christiane Bourdenet is founder and vice-president of the Franco-German association in Avignon: “The first contact that we make in these cases is with its twin city, it is Wetzlar which is in Hesse. Hesse is not affected. The region of Rhineland-Palatinate is affected but this is not very far! It is as if you were saying that Avignon is not affected but Marseille is “.
Many inhabitants of Wetzlar therefore have relatives and relatives in Rhineland-Palatinate. In the words of the founder of the Franco-German association “all these people are a little bit traumatized”.
What if we asked them to come and spend 48 hours in Provence!
Christiane Bourdenet has also made contact with the German community in Avignon. A large community from several regions of Germany: “They are extremely touched and wonder whether how they can help !”
Helping the founder of the association has thought about it: “This morning, I said to myself: what if in a month we proposed to the victims to come and spend 48 hours or three days in Provence to restore their morale a little?” and conclude “Come on, if all Vauclusiens say that, what would it be!”
