Revelations about bloated CO2-Compensation projects have discredited the billion-dollar market with climate certificates. It’s time for companies to rethink.

Fly, shop and stream. All of this is supposedly possible today without a guilty conscience. The holiday traveler pays a few francs extra for the flight to Tenerife, and the emissions caused by the flight are compensated for. When buying the new Airpods in the online shop, one click and a few centimes are all it takes to set the greenhouse gases produced for production and transport back to zero. Even the consumption of series on Netflix can be done without any feelings of guilt: the American company claims to be climate-neutral; the company has for all CO2emissions – 1.5 million tons last year – purchased certificates.
