TMAO was previously used to treat people. In 2009, Chinese researchers injected the eyeballs of glaucoma patients. In this eye disease, the pressure on the eyeball increases. Injections of TMAO have the desired effect: the patient’s eyes are restored to health.
In 2013 it was also used to fight cystic fibrosis, a lung disease. The substance helps, but TMAO is not widely used. Scientists believe that to heal with this substance, you need to absorb so much TMAO into your body that you may start to smell like rotten fish.
TMAO is actually used in the laboratory to stabilize some proteins. More research is needed on the use of this substance to treat the disease.
