The former vice president of Xbox fears the harmful effects of the Game Pass

  • The Game Pass could have a bad impact on the industry
  • According to the former vice president of Xbox

There is no denying the popularity of popular services such as Game Pass, Ubisoft +, Apple Arcade or the upcoming transformative PlayStation Plus, which provide access to plenty of games in exchange for a monthly fee, triggering dedicated game purchases. However, former Xbox vice president Ed Fries pointed out in an Xbox Expansion podcast that this is not necessarily a good direction.

Fries said the Game Pass is a bit intimidating, as it reminds him of Spotify, which, after its launch, completely upset the music industry and virtually weaned people off buying music. Fries says care must be taken to ensure that video games do not suffer a similar fate, as this market is much more fragile than people would think. He adds that he also loves Game Pass and Spotify as users, as they are great alternatives, but they don’t necessarily do the industry any good.
