The former Algerian international, Faouzi Mansouri, is no more!

Former Algerian football player Faouzi Mansouri died on Wednesday May 18 following a long illness.

Algerian football has lost one of its loyal and valiant soldiers. Faouzi Mansouri, originally from Chemin-Bas-d’Avignon, died at the age of 66 after a long illness.

It was the Montpellier club which announced the news on Wednesday May 18 on its website: “The MHSC learned today with great sadness of the death of its former player, Faouzi Mansouri, who had been fighting for months against a long illness ( …). President Laurent Nicollin, the entire MHSC family and that of the Nicollin Group which he joined after his retirement from sport, offer their most sincere condolences to his wife Isabelle, his son Mikis, his family and his loved ones”.

Who is Faouzi Mansouri?

Born on January 17, 1956 in Menzel Bourguiba in Tunisia, he began his football career in his neighborhood club before joining the Nîmes Olympique Academy with which he won the Gambardella Cup in 1977.

The Algerian joined the Nîmes first team with which he spent five seasons between 1975 and 1980. During his career, he also wore the colors of AS Béziers (1980-1981), Montpellier (1981-1983) and Mulhouse (1983). -1985).

But it was probably with the Montpellier club that he had his best years by confirming his talent. The Algerian left side made a second spell with the Pailladin club in 1986 and took part in sixty games with a goal on the clock.

Faouzi Mansouri steeped his name in the annals of Algerian football after participating in two World Cups with the Fennecs, in 1982 and 1986.

Holder of the left-back position during the famous match against Federal Germany, the Algerian amazed the German attackers with his performance which helped Abdelhamid Kermali’s men to record their first victory in a World Cup on the occasion 1982 World Cup in Gijon, Spain.

He wore the green jersey 13 times during his career.
