Asteroid
There are lots of objects in outer space, one of which is asteroids. There are millions of asteroids in space.
Asteroids are one of the space objects that most often visit Earth. What are asteroids?
Asteroids are rocky remains from the formation of the solar system. Asteroids orbit around the sun near the ecliptic plane, which is the same plane in which the planets orbit the Sun. This means that the asteroid is in the same plane as Earth.
Astronomers once thought asteroids were the remains of rocky planets destroyed by Jupiter’s gravity long ago. Now scientists think that the asteroids are likely just remnants from the formation of our solar system 4.6 billion years ago.
The largest asteroid
The largest known asteroid is Vesta. Vesta was discovered on March 29, 1807 by astronomer Heinrich Wilhelm Olbers.
Vesta is the second largest object in the asteroid belt after the dwarf planet Ceres. The asteroid belt is a place in the solar system where small objects orbit the sun. These objects mostly move between the orbits of the planets Mars and Jupiter.
