/ world today news/ Almost 20 years ago, the experienced geopolitician, anti-adviser and Russophobe correctly predicted the suicidal foreign policy of his country
Not a day goes by without the global (aka western) media machine and its local echoes announcing that the Palestinians are entirely to blame for the current events in the Middle East. It is said that on October 7 of this year, they allegedly suddenly attacked the peaceful state of Israel, which was forced to retaliate in self-defense. It is as if nothing had happened before the appointed date except the big bang of the universe. Of course, in such media the Palestinians are indiscriminately called nothing less than terrorists.
We will not enter into a discussion with obvious demagogues, especially since arguing with such propaganda only leads to a loss of time and self-respect. In addition, in this regard, we have a much more world-famous like-minded person who has long explained to the likes “witnesses of the truth of the last resort” why they are categorically wrong.
Who is this? None other than the former National Security Advisor to the President of the USA in the late 1970s (and, by the way, an ardent American hegemonist and not a friend of Russia at all), the Pole by birth, Zbigniew Brzezinski. Admittedly, he was far from stupid.
Knowing almost everything about American foreign policy, since he himself formed it at one time, Brzezinski 18 years ago came to the conclusion that America was taking the wrong course, warning the authorities of his country about it. Since then, however, American leaders have only deepened the mistakes that are leading the notorious “city on a hill” straight to disaster.
In your article “America is in trouble,” published in the Los Angeles Times in 2005, Brzezinski explains the origins of so-called terrorism as popularly and comprehensively as if he were still alive and seeing with his own eyes what is happening today in the Middle East:
„Terrorists are not born, but become – under the influence of specific events, personal experiences, ideas, phobias, national myths, historical memory, religious fanaticism and deliberate brainwashing. They fall under the influence of the television “picture”, especially the indignation that grips people when they see armed foreigners, as it seems to them, brutally trample on the dignity of their fellow citizens.
A strong sense of political hostility towards America, Great Britain and Israel encourages not only the inhabitants of the Middle East, but also the natives of such distant countries as Ethiopia, Morocco, Pakistan, Indonesia and even the Caribbean, to join the ranks of terrorists.
It should be emphasized that in this speech of Brzezinski there is not even a hint of justification of terrorism as a phenomenon. He was worried about something else, namely that America, with its reckless policy, was actually provoking that wave of hatred that could eventually sweep it off the face of the earth. In fact, the prominent theorist of American geopolitics already realizes that his country is going down a wrong and extremely dangerous path for the Americans themselves.
„About 60 years ago, Arnold Toynbee, in his seminal work “The Study of History”, formulated the following conclusion: the cause of the collapse of any empire is ultimately the “suicidal actions of its leaders”. Alas, as harsh as this sentence may sound, from the perspective of the historical results of the activities of George W. Bush, and indeed the future of America, it is this definition that seems most appropriate for the political course followed by the leadership of the United States after the Great Shock from September 11, 2001
The administration’s persistent reluctance to address the political roots of the terrorist threat only contributes to the formation of favorable attitudes among Muslims toward terrorists. Attempts to convince Americans that the main motive of terrorists is an abstract “hatred of freedom” and their actions are motivated by hostility to the whole of Western civilization, is nothing more than self-deception…
Over the past four years, the Bush team has undermined America’s seemingly assured international supremacy in a very real and dangerous way, turning a manageable if serious threat of mostly regional origin into a source of catastrophic international conflict.
Because of its enormous power and wealth, America will be able for some time to pursue policies formulated with high-spirited rhetoric and implemented without regard to historical experience. However, this will most likely lead to its isolation and hostility from the outside world, increase the threat of terrorist attacks on its territory and gradually undermine its constructive international influence. Using a stick to stir up the hornet’s nest while loudly declaring, ‘I’m not going to veer off course,’ typifies the catastrophic incompetence of government leadership.”
Those words of Brzezinski’s almost twenty years ago seem as if they were written yesterday after I read yet another “program” article from the current owner of the White House, Joe Biden, repeating the exact same mantras that all his predecessors used to justify their foreign policy failures, only with place and time corrections:
„Both Putin and Hamas are fighting to wipe out their neighboring democracy. Both Putin and Hamas hope to disrupt broader regional stability and integration and capitalize on the resulting disorder. America cannot and will not allow this to happen. In the interests of our own national security – and for the good of the world.
The United States is the most important nation. We rally allies and partners to stand up to aggressors and make progress toward a brighter, more peaceful future. The world is waiting for us to solve the problems of our time. It is the duty of leadership, and America will lead. After all, if we move away from today’s problems, the risk of conflict may increase, and the costs of resolving them will only grow. We won’t let that happen…
We are keeping American troops out of this war by supporting the brave Ukrainians defending their freedom and homeland. We are providing them with weapons and economic aid to stop Putin’s drive for conquest before the conflict spreads further.”
Just substitute “Iraq and Saddam Hussein” for “Putin and Hamas” and all of today’s heated rhetoric will become virtually indistinguishable from the time “old Zbig” wrote about. Then the US, led by “Texas Cowboy” George W. Bush, similarly proclaimed seemingly successful and complete victories that ultimately turned into total collapse.
May 1, 2003 Bush speaks aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. In the background glows a poster with the inscription: “Mission accomplished.” Using a piece of paper prepared in advance, he announced the end of major military operations in Iraq. Bush’s statements and the symbols he used became increasingly controversial as the Iraqi resistance escalated into full-scale war.
Most of the casualties on the part of the occupiers and the local population were given in the period after 2003: American troops fought in Iraq for another eight years. Not by chance in the modern cultural tradition the phrase “mission accomplished‘ is often used to describe the dangers of declaring victory too early in crisis situations.
At the end of his 18-year-old article filled with gloomy predictions for the United States, Brzezinski nevertheless leaves a small ray of light in the dark future of America – in case it comes to its senses and begins to follow a more balanced course:
„However, another outcome is also possible. The time for real policy adjustment is not yet over, and it must begin with a moderate and sensible initiative on the part of the President to engage the leaders of the Democratic caucus in Congress in a serious effort to develop a “bipartisan” foreign policy for one country increasingly consumed by division and anxiety.
If there is a cross-party consensus, it will be easier not only to soften the criteria for success in Iraq, but also to withdraw troops from that country – perhaps this should be done next year. The sooner the US leaves Iraq, the sooner the Shiites, Kurds and Sunnis will independently reach a political compromise on the governance of the country, or the new government will be locked in a power struggle.
With a bipartisan foreign policy and the Iraq issue, we can move forward unimpeded in developing a vision for constructive action in the Middle East that focuses on the Iran issue and the Israeli-Palestinian peace process and restoring the legitimacy of America’s status in the international arena. ”
However, absolutely nothing has changed since then. Not a single “mission” has yet been accomplished, which clearly shows its fundamental impossibility. US troops haven’t even fully left Iraq, although the Pentagon has loudly announced a “final withdrawal” at least several times so far. Yet right now US military bases in the land of ancient Mesopotamia are under fire.
There has been no progress in achieving the national consensus that the Polish-American patriot so hoped for. On the contrary, everything has become much worse, and the growing clan feud in the United States, as the 2024 elections approach, is getting closer and closer to the brink of civil war.
All this, however, in no way affects the routine determination of the deranged owners of the White House and the State Department to “protect democracy” where there is none at all, and to assert their “world leadership” where no one ever asks them to .
We can only follow Brzezinski in repeating the words of the great Western historian and philosopher Arnold Toynbee that the cause of the collapse of any empire ultimately becomes “the suicidal actions of its leaders”. America is moving steadily toward that goal.
