The foreign secretaries of China and the Philippines discussed economic ties and tensions in the South China Sea, with the former pledging to work with ASEAN nations. The two nations also discussed regional issues.

The foreign secretary of the Philippines, Enrique Manalo, has reiterated the country’s compliance with the One China Policy in a meeting with China’s Vice Foreign Minister, Qin Gang. Expansion of economic links between the two countries was also discussed as was the dispute over the South China Sea. Qin, who is currently in the Philippines on a two-day visit, said that both countries were ‘close neighbours across the sea.’ China, which regards Taiwan as a breakaway province, has pledged to bring the territory under its control eventually, with the use of force if necessary.
