Colorado Senator Antonio Barrios considers the US Embassy’s announcement of economic sanctions against Tabesa to be a rehash and believes it is time for Paraguay to show that it is a sovereign and independent country and not an American colony.

Honor Colorado in the Senate is preparing a statement to be submitted in draft form to Congress to ask the Foreign Ministry to take note of the interventions of the US Embassy in our country. “The Foreign Ministry is asked to summon the American ambassador and ask him the appropriate questions, because we are a sovereign, independent country and not an American colony where they can come and impose sanctions on our country if they do not comply. Let them do it in their country, where they have more problems than we do,” commented Senator Barrios.
The parliamentarian is confident that the Foreign Ministry will prevail and that the diplomatic line that must be followed will prevail.
According to Barrios, the trade war has been going on for decades and started with Philip Morris, for whom Tabesa has always been a nuisance. “It has always acted against them and we have to understand that the tobacco industry is so powerful in the US that it has a lot of influence at all levels,” said Barrios.
