The “foreign interference” stars in the plenary of the Chinese Legislative

Beijing, Mar 8 (EFE) .- China is preparing legislation to counteract “sanctions and interference” from abroad and thus “face the challenges and risks posed by foreign forces,” according to a work report of the Standing Committee of the National Assembly Popular (ANP, Legislative), which holds its annual meeting until Thursday.

The president of the Standing Committee of the ANP, Li Zhanshu, indicated that China will provide a “legal toolbox” to prevent other countries from using “long-arm jurisdictions or meddling” in Chinese internal affairs, according to the state agency Xinhua.

Although the details of this legislation are not yet known, it would aim, according to the Global Times newspaper, “to counteract the sanctions that some countries, including the United States, have imposed on Chinese officials and companies by attacking their dignity and the sovereignty of the country.”

China has repeatedly reiterated its opposition to what it considers to be Washington’s interference on account of the security law in Hong Kong – to which must be added the electoral reform that the ANP will presumably approve this Thursday – or due to the situation of the human rights of Muslim minorities in China’s northwest Xinjiang region.

For example, the former US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, sanctioned 14 members of the ANP last December for having participated in the removal of four opposition MPs in Hong Kong, which angered Beijing.

During the term of former President Donald Trump, Washington took other measures, such as the inclusion of dozens of companies from the Asian nation on the blacklist of the US Department of Defense, which it accuses of being controlled by the Chinese Army.

The Asian country also did not feel good that Australia requested an international investigation on account of China’s management in the early stages of the pandemic, considering that the proposal hid political motivations and was at the service of a sector of US politics. EFE
