NOK 2,500 in increased electricity costs for an ordinary household. That is according to the website Europower costs last year for the new cables to Germany and England.
Statnett has calculated how much the foreign cables raised the price of electricity in southern Norway and concludes that it is about 10 øre more kilowatt hours. According to Statnett, the cables are to blame for around 10 percent of the high electricity prices.

– Not the main reason
– In the public debate, it is presented as if the two new cables are the main reason for the record high electricity prices we have seen this winter. Our calculations show that this is not true. Many other factors have contributed to the high prices, says Executive Vice President Gunnar Løvås according to a press release from Statnett. He points to rapidly rising gas prices as the most important reason, but admits that the foreign cables have also had some effect.

– Extreme situation this winter
The electricity price in 2021 was on average 76 øre / kWh in southern Norway throughout the year, and in the last three months it was as high as 126 øre / kWh. This is an increase of 92.5 øre / kWh compared to the average over the last ten years, according to Statnett. 10 percent of this is about 10 øre.
– Price effect of the cables over time is the same as we had when we applied for a license. Now we see that the extreme situation we are in this winter has a high effect for a period, but this is not a lasting change, says Løvås.
