The Ford Ranger Raptor is the first model of the next-generation Ranger series to be launched in the European market and is already being delivered to customers. It will also be available in Latvia from February.
More power, more fun
The biggest news for fans of excellent performance is the all-new 3-liter “EcoBoost V6 Twin-turbo” gasoline engine, which Ford Performance has increased to 288 hp and 491 Nm of torque. The cylinder block of this engine is manufactured from special compacted graphite cast iron, which is approximately 75 percent stronger and up to 75 percent more resistant to deformation than conventional cast iron.
The engine responds immediately to throttle input, while a rapid increase in power is provided by the “anti-lag” system borrowed from the racing world, which prevents turbocharger lag and was first used in a similar form on the street version of the Ford GT and the Focus ST.
In drive mode, Baja’s new “anti-lag” system spins the turbocharger three seconds more after the driver releases the throttle. This allows for faster acceleration when the driver presses the gas pedal again when exiting a corner. In addition, the engine is programmed with individual turbocharger performance profiles for each gear of the advanced 10-speed automatic transmission to ensure optimal performance.
Ranger Raptor’s new power unit allows you to accelerate effortlessly both on gravel and dirt roads, as well as in mud and sand. In addition to the new 3-liter V6 turbocharged gasoline engine, a two-liter “EcoBlue Bi-turbo” diesel engine will continue to be available.
In order for the Ranger Raptor’s sound to match such amazing car capabilities, the driver can activate one of the four modes of the electronic active exhaust system and thus change the timbre of the pick-up engine.
“Ranger Raptor’s three-liter V6 turbo engine will provide such dynamics that will satisfy even the most demanding performance enthusiast and is designed to maneuver effortlessly on Latvian off-roads,” says Ivo Velde, director of Ford’s auto center.
Built for tough tests
Compared to the all-new Ranger, the new Ranger Raptor has a truly unique chassis. The Raptor features a range of specific mounts and reinforcements for elements such as the C-pillars, cargo box and spare wheel, as well as unique damper travel stops, damper support assemblies and rear shock brackets. All this allows the driver to be sure that the car will cope even in particularly difficult off-road conditions.
“Ford” engineers have completely redesigned the suspension. It features all-new strong yet lightweight aluminum upper and lower arms, long-travel front and rear suspension, and an improved Watt mechanism at the rear to keep the Raptor in control at high speeds even over extremely rough terrain.
New generation “Fox” 2.5-inch “Live Valve” internal bypass shock absorbers are equipped with the most advanced control technology, which changes the damping characteristics depending on the degree of compression and extension. They are the most advanced shock absorbers ever installed on a Ranger Raptor, and with oil-infused Teflon, internal friction is approximately 50 percent less than the previous generation Ranger Raptor.
Development and tuning was done by Ford Performance through a combination of computer-aided engineering and real-world testing. Adjusting the springs, setting the ground clearance, adjusting the valves and honing the damping properties – all this has been done with only one goal: to create the perfect balance between comfort, handling, stability and grip, both on and off-road.
The Ranger Raptor’s ability to handle rough terrain is further enhanced by serious underbody protection. The front skid plate is almost twice the size of the next-generation standard Ranger and is made from 2.3mm thick high-strength steel. This element, combined with the engine bottom and transfer case skid plates, protects several important components – the radiator, steering system, front cross member, engine crankcase and front differential.
Control in all conditions
For the first time, the Ranger Raptor has modern permanent four-wheel drive with an all-new electronically controlled two-speed transfer case. In addition, it is combined with locking differentials on the front and rear axles – a valuable feature for hardened off-road enthusiasts.
To tackle any challenge – smooth roads, deep ravines and everything in between – the Ranger Raptor has seven driving modes, two of which include the off-road-oriented Baja settings. They configure the vehicle’s electronic systems for maximum performance and high speed when driving off-road.
Each drive mode changes the settings in several car systems – engine, transmission, ABS sensitivity, traction and stability control, exhaust valve activation, steering and throttle response. In addition, depending on the selected mode, not only the indicators of the gauges and information about the vehicle, but also the color palette of the instrument panel and the central touch screen change.
The new generation Ranger Raptor is also equipped with Trail Control, which is like off-road cruise control. When activated, just set a speed of up to 32 km/h and the car will control acceleration and braking by itself, while the driver can focus only on steering in challenging environments.
Persuasive style
Ranger Raptor has also been given a completely new visual image that perfectly reflects the fearlessness and power of the next generation Ranger. Matrix LED headlights with LED daytime running lights take Raptor lighting to a new level. This includes adaptive turn signals, high beams that do not dazzle oncoming or oncoming drivers, as well as dynamic beam leveling to provide the driver and other road users with the best possible visibility.
There are completely new style seats in both the front and back, which designers took inspiration from jet fighters. They increase comfort and provide better support when cornering at high speed.
Code Orange accents on the instrument panel, front fascia and seats are enhanced by Ranger Raptor interior lighting that gives the cabin an amber glow. The sporty feel is complemented by a heated premium leather sports steering wheel with thumbholes, center position markings and cast magnesium gearshift paddles.
The new Ranger Raptor is equipped with a fully digital 12.4-inch instrument panel and a 12-inch central touchscreen, and both the driver and passengers will also enjoy the latest digital technology, including the new generation Ford Sync 4A, as well as entertainment at no extra cost. a system that allows you to use both “Apple CarPlay” and “Android Auto” wirelessly. In addition, a 10-speaker “Bang&Olufsen” audio system is also available.
