The Aceh Transitional Committee (KPA) or an organization that accommodates former Free Aceh Movement Combatants (GAM) reject the statement Aceh Police who called the raising of the Star and Moon flag an act of treason.
The Crescent Star flag, which was once used as a symbol of GAM, was hoisted by a former high-ranking GAM official on December 4, 2021, to coincide with the GAM Anniversary. The case was immediately processed by the Aceh Police.
UKPA asked the Aceh Police Chief to stop the investigation involving the former GAM official. KPA spokesman Azhari Cage said that his party had held a meeting with the former GAM Commander Muzakkir Manaf regarding the matter. As a result, they refuse to fly the flag of the Moon and Stars, which is called treason.
“From the results of the meeting’s decision, I need to emphasize that we refuse to be called treason to our colleagues raising the flag on December 4 yesterday,” Azhari told reporters, Wednesday (29/12).
Azhari said the Crescent Star flag was clearly stated in the Helsinki MoU and in point 1.1.5 in the Aceh Government Law. Until now, he said, the flag is still legally valid and has a qanun that was ratified in 2013.
It’s just that the flag is still a polemic at the central level. According to Azhari, there is no legal reason whatsoever for the Aceh Police to declare the flag illegal.
“There is no legal reason whatsoever for the Regional Police to declare the star-moon flag a treason. So, in a decision meeting chaired by the Commander of the Mualem Central Command that we refuse to be called treason about the flag,” he said.
For this reason, his party asked the Aceh Police Chief to stop the investigation case involving a high-ranking GAM official for raising the Crescent Star flag on December 4, 2021, in commemoration of the GAM Anniversary.
“We ask the regional police chief to stop this case. Because this is really not in accordance with the applicable law,” added Azhari Cagee.
Previously, the Aceh Police were investigating whether there was an element of treason in the raising of the Crescent Star flag. The case that ensnared the head of the Aceh Mualimin Zulkarnaini Hamzah alias Tgk Ni is now being handled by the Ditreskrimum of the Aceh Police.
“We are still investigating whether the intentions and motives in question are in line with Article 106 of the Criminal Code regarding treason,” said Head of Public Relations of the Aceh Police, Kombes Pol Winardi, Saturday (12/18).
The Aceh Police had previously requested that the Crescent Star flag not be flown and tried to stop the activities at that time. However, he said, the crowd did not heed the appeal. The Star and Moon flag was flown on December 4th.
Special Meeting
Aceh Governor Nova Iriansyah will hold a special meeting with the leadership of the Aceh DPR to discuss the issue of the Crescent Star flag, which is still a polemic at this time.
This statement was made by the Governor of Aceh in response to the interruption of a member of the Aceh DPR who requested that the flag issue be discussed in a plenary meeting.
“We have agreed with the leadership of the DPRA to discuss this specifically, and summon the relevant parties,” Nova said, Wednesday (29/12).
