The Flemish game studio Larian Studios has developed an important computer game and is now releasing it independently. That is a very exceptional fact, said gaming expert David Verbruggen Business AM.

Why is this important?
The gaming industry in Flanders is gaining in importance. In addition to high-quality courses at universities of applied sciences, an originally Flemish studio is now also allowed to develop an important game. Verbruggen: “Larian Studios is originally a Flemish studio and started in Ghent. Very small, the company has had really dark years. But still people have continued to believe in their games. Especially the founder, Swen Vincke, has worked for years on the road. He has started opening studios all over the world and now has an international company. This is now topped off with a top game, Baldur’s Gate III, which Larian was allowed to make. The intellectual property belongs to another company.” “This is very exceptional for a Flemish game studio. It does happen that studios subcontract making pieces of video games for larger players. But really being allowed to make a full game and then market it yourself… Larian Studios has a lot of followers and they eagerly use that, through marketing on social media. I have not yet seen that in our country, but this does not happen very often in other countries either.” “Larian is no longer a purely Flemish studio. The company has studios in Quebec, Barcelona and Malaysia. That’s something we’re seeing happening across the industry. A lot of work is done remotely. You already have a mix of profiles and nationalities anyway. But there is more interest from foreign companies in our region. Both for games, and perhaps also to settle here in the long term,” concludes Verbruggen.
