A commemorative book worthy of honoring the ’56 legend, who died the year before last, was published in the Patriots workshop, which celebrates Mária Wittner and the ideals she represented. is 300 pages, with rich color illustrations.. The hardcover, colorful commemorative book entitled “We Must Carry the Flag” covers the intellectual heritage of Maria Wittner over 328 pages. The first half of the book contains studies of the memorial meeting held in Budapest in March this year, which revolves around the life of the hero of 1956 and the issues he considered important. After the opening speech of the Parliament Orsolya Ferencz and the welcome of the supporter of the Parliament Szilárd Németh, followed the study by the historian Dr. Barbara Bank, entitled The Captivity of Mária Wittner and which deals with the time of the person – freedom fight as a political prisoner between 1957. and 1970. The writing of Beatrix Frölichné Lendvai is the dream of Mária Wittner, the XVI. describes the birth of the Ilonka Tóth Memorial House in the area, while the work of the historian Csaba Hajagos entitled “In the Line of Fire” summarizes the activities of the hero of ’56 during the freedom struggle. Róbert Hetzmann, president of the Patriots, remembers Mária Wittner’s efforts to change communist street names in his writing.
The memoir is also written by film director Gábor Koltay, who shares with the reader his thoughts on his biographical film about Mária Wittner entitled 217 days. The book also includes a study by the historian Dr. Áron Máthé, vice-president of the NEB, with the title Communist Propaganda 1956: The Definition and Application of Fascism. The chapter based on the lectures of the March conference ends with the study of legal lawyer Dr. Tibor Zinner entitled Mária, “girl from Pest”, subtitled Emlékfoszlány documents and discussions.
The writings published in the commemorative book are followed by a special appendix of photographs showing the extremely diverse and important role of Mária Wittner in public life after the regime change, in which symbolically 56 photos – the first photo was taken in 1989, the last one in 2022. In the appendix of the book, there is the broken material of the traveling exhibition in memory of Mária Wittner with the title “Készültem az útra” on to include.
The recently published memorial book is a tribute to the brave stand and life work of Mária Wittner, who did not care that history is written by the winners. The volume was produced with a grant from the Prime Minister’s Office and Fund Manager Gábor Bethlen, and will not be commercially available.
