“9,634 people were arrested between August 7 and August 13” in Dakar and in the regions for breach of the measures for the compulsory wearing of masks in public places to fight against the spread of Covid-19.
These individuals arrested were “for not wearing a mask” in markets, places of commerce, transport and private services. And the fixed fines made it possible to bring back 12,652,000 CFA francs to the State, notes the national police under the Directorate of Public Security (Dsp), in an analysis note that we consulted.
Police are calling on the population not to “minimize the pandemic” by observing social distancing, wearing masks and avoiding illegal gatherings.
The measure has so far been little respected in Dakar, observed the National Police Directorate on Friday. However, the authorities had announced an obligation to wear a mask in public, before specifying that any violation exposes the perpetrator to criminal penalties ranging from fines to imprisonment.
Senegal officially has 11,872 cases of the new coronavirus this Friday, including 7,615 cured, 249 deaths and 4,007 still under treatment.
