New York: cheap neighborhoods. One option is on the other side of the famous Brooklyn Bridge. Safest areas: Williamburg and Brookly Heights. /Photo: Clarín Archive.

1. Brooklyn. It is a neighborhood where you can find cheap accommodation, as well as being a place with its own identity and curiosities to see and explore. The famous Brooklyn Bridge links this populated neighborhood with the southern part of Manhattan. The Metrocard is an advantage for solving distances in New York and this information is applicable to this neighborhood so often filmed in Hollywood movies. There are hotels like the Oyo Bed and Breakfast, the Nysuitedeal, and the Super 8 Brooklyn with prices averaging $100 a night. Safest areas: Williamsburg and Brooklyn Heights.

2. Long Island (Queens). It is across the East River, very close to the center of New York, and it is a good option to find cheaper places. In recent years, many low-cost hotels have been built with interesting prices. Traditional hotels average US$80 per day.

3. New Jersey. Its residential neighborhoods are another interesting and economical option to choose. There are many apartments such as the Athenas Domus or the Residence Inn, cheaper than the few hotels in the area. The Hoboken and Weehawken areas are the most recommended (there are apartments for an average of US$70). Going to Manhattan from New Jersey is very simple. A Paterson bus can be caught on virtually every street and 24 hours a day. If the traffic is not very heavy, you can reach New York in 15 minutes. The journey costs U$S 3 and the ticket is bought on the bus itself.

4. Washington Heights y Harlem. They are located in the northern part of the island of Manhattan and are some of the accessible options for not spending a lot on accommodation. In these neighborhoods there are many apartments (you can get them for US$75) and few hotels. From Harlem you can get to Times Square by subway (about 15 minutes). As for the Washington Heights neighborhood, where Sylvan Terrace, one of the most picturesque streets in the City, is located, it is a little further north. Of course, to the east of Central Park is Spanish Harlem, one of the most conflictive areas of the city. A must: the route of Gospel masses in African-American Evangelical Protestant churches.

5.Staten Island. An economical option where apartments are available for US$70, a good price. The SkyLline views are spectacular. Of course, this district located in the southwest of Manhattan is a bit remote: it takes an hour to go there and back on a ferry that is free and that arrives at Battery Park, in the south of the Island, an impractical place to move with public transport.
