Alexia Putellas, twice, and Claudia Pina have given victory to Barça women against Real Madrid in what was the first women’s ‘Clásico’ played in the Champions League. The Toril players went ahead in Carmona’s shoes, but a very hard-working second half by the azulgranas managed to turn the electronic game around. The Camp Nou will pass judgment on the Champions League quarter-final second leg after a most entertaining first leg.
Esther and Lucía make Real Madrid dream
Football lovers are in luck. Many years have passed, but finally the first women’s football ‘Clásico’ has been held in a European competition. Alfredo Di Stefano has hosted a duel that, on the pitch, was much more balanced than what was commented on in all the previous ones. This has made it a vibrant match, with fans in love with a good game and with the feeling that women’s football, for the benefit of all, has no ceiling.
Toril’s team raised a very serious match from the first minute. Real Madrid’s idea was very clear: fall back well back to let Barça find no gap in their perfectly worked defence. When the locals recovered the ball, the slogan was to be very vertical to attack Paños’ goal. Real Madrid had it so clear that in less than ten minutes they opened the scoring. It was Olga who sent a perfect play by Esther to the bottom of the net. The number ‘7’ crossed the ball to perfection to the delight of Di Stefano, making it impossible for the Barça goal to be stretched.
Esther, in creativity, and Lucía, in defense, were the pillars of the team that wore black, with the same kit with which the men’s team had lost 0-4 days before at the Santiago Bernabéu. Real Madrid’s good work made it very close to scoring the second goal before the break, but Esther’s shot hit the post. Barça got better as the minutes went by, making Misa have to work hard on several occasions. However, Giraldez’s players were not very creative, rushing too far against a very well structured defense.
Putellas and Pina give a blow of authority
Leaving the locker room felt very good for Barça. The azulgranas threw quality, but also pride and caste to try to demonstrate the reasons why they are the best women’s football club in the world. They quickly found their reward, in a penalty converted by Alexia Putellas after reviewing the braid in the VAR.
The minutes passed and the domain was even more Blaugrana if possible. Those of Giraldez sought to give more speed to the conduction of the ball, trying to find a rival crack. The boots of Claudia Pina and Jenny Hermoso hosted two clear opportunities to turn the score around, but they did not encounter enough fortune to materialize their chances. Real Madrid tried to resist as best they could, but Barça’s improvement on the pitch at Di Stefano was more than noticeable.
Through that dominance with the ball, the Barça team could materialize their comeback in Madrid. Claudia Pina, who had come out in the second half, turned it around after scoring a ball that was left free inside the area. She crossed the ball to Misa’s right and the local goalkeeper could do nothing. Already in injury time, Alexia’s genius showed why she is the current winner of the Ballon d’Or. She received a ball inside the area and subtly chipped it before Misa’s exit. The match ended with 1-3 on the scoreboard and, in this way, the Camp Nou will pass sentence in the second leg of the quarterfinals of the Women’s Champions League. How beautiful this competition is and how beautiful the first women’s ‘Clásico’ played in a European title has been.
